Mary Tudor (Bloody Mary) 1516-1558
Mary I Queen of England 1553-1558
Mary Tudor is the daughter of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. In 1553, she marries Phillip II of Spain to create political and religious connections. Throughout her reign of England, she tries desperately to bare a Catholic heir to inherit the throne. She ultimately dies with no children and is succeeded by her Protestant half sister, Elizabeth. Mary gains the nickname 'Bloody Mary' for her barbaric burning of Protestants and other heretics during her reign.
Mary Tudor is featured in the film Elizabeth and the drama by Alfred Tennyson called Queen Mary.
Her life is documented in the novels Elizabeth, by Tom McGregor, I am Mary Tudor, by H.W. Lewis and Bloody Mary, by Carolly Erickson.
