François, duc d'Alençon

Francois, duc d'Alencon

Francois was born in 1554 to Henri II and Catherine de Medicis, he was their youngest son. Unlike his three brothers before him, Francois never became king of France. He was rather ugly, pockmarked and ill shaped. Probably one of the most noted things about him was the fact that he was considered as a husband for Elizabeth I of England, but was later rejected.

William the Silent, king of the Netherlands, asked Francois to be the leader of his army in their revolt against Spain. But instead he invaded the Netherlands, but withdrew in 1583, and shortly died after in 1584

He has appeared in the movies Queen Margot, Elizabeth, and in the series Elizabeth R.
